Bottle Feeding – Choosing The Best Formula

I am going to feed my baby formula. But I am overwhelmed by the choices available. How do I go about choosing the formula that is right for my baby?

It is reassuring to know that enormous amounts of research have been poured into making baby formula as close to breast milk as possible. Your baby won’t get the immunity that breast milk imparts, but will get excellent nutrition. Although formula is based on cow’s milk, it has been adapted to make it both richer and more digestible than cow’s milk. Babies should not be exposed to ordinary cow’s milk until after the twelve-month mark, as it is hard for them to digest before then. An iron-enriched formula is recommended. The best way to start selecting the right formula for you is to consult your doctor or the nurse at your local clinic. If you start formula from day one, then the nursing staff at your hospital will be very well equipped to advise you.

Once you start with a formula, watch your baby closely to see if it is agreeing with baby. There are a very small number of babies who do better on soya formula for various reasons. Be prepared to take advice and go through some trial and error, because finding the right solution for your baby is vital. Don’t be put off if other moms seem to be having an easier time than you. You will find the right answer for your baby!

As the baby grows it may be necessary to change the formula to meet his growing needs. By that time you will have a doctor or health worker whose advice you value, and with whom you can discuss this issue.
