Meconium in amniotic fluid

When my waters broke the fluid was green and now my doctor wants to perform a caesarian. What is going on?

The first bowel movement of the newborn baby is a sticky greenish/black substance called meconium. It occasionally happens that during or just prior to the birth process, the baby becomes distressed and passes some meconium. The implications of this are serious as both you and the baby can be at risk of infection. In addition the condition of the baby needs to be urgently assessed.

It is wise to see the meconium as a useful indicator that intervention is required and to accept that a caesarian may be necessary in this situation. +27 (0)81 885 4683
