Pregnancy

What does an incompetent cervix mean?

In approximately 1% of pregnancies the cervix is ‘incompetent’. There are a wide variety of reasons for this, from genetic reasons to problems from previous pregnancies. Your doctor may need to close the cervix with a stitch in order for you carry your baby to full term. You will be asked to inform your doctor immediately if you notice a change in vaginal discharge or toilet frequency, or any sensation of pressure in the abdomen. Your chances of carrying your baby to full term under these conditions are excellent and your doctor will make the important decisions that this condition requires, such as the appropriate time to remove the stitch.
