Food to avoid during pregnancy

I have just found out I am pregnant and am so excited! Please could you advise what foods I should avoid?

While fish is usually a good source of protein and Omega 3 fatty acids, fish high in mercury should be avoided during pregnancy. This can harm your baby’s developing nervous system.
Examples include:
– swordfish
– shark
– king mackerel
– tile fish
Don’t eat too much tuna either, no more than 170g a week. Tuna has been known to be high in mercury.

Raw, undercooked or contaminated seafood
• Avoid sushi, sashimi, scallops and clams
• Avoid foods labelled jerky or nova style, or fish that is kippered or smoked. Smoked is ok if it is cooked again into other food (e.g. smoked salmon in scrambled eggs)

• Avoid undercooked meat, poultry and eggs. During pregnancy, there is an increased risk of food poisoning, which in rare cases can affect the baby.
• Properly cook all meat and poultry. You can use a meat thermometer to be sure.
• Cook hotdog and processed lunch meat until steaming, or avoid it entirely. You can contract a rare but serious illness called listeriosis.
• Avoid refrigerated pates and meat spreads.

• Cook eggs until yolks and whites are firm.

• Watch out for hidden raw egg in places like eggnog, raw batter, hollandaise sauce and Caesar salad dressing.

Unpasteurised food
• Soft cheeses such as brie, feta and blue cheese, unless otherwise specified, are made with unpasteurised milk.

• Avoid unpasteurised juice.
