Folic acid supplement during pregnancy

I have heard that folic acid is an important supplement for the early development of the foetus. If I am pregnant already is it too late to start supplementing?

The importance of folic acid during pregnancy is mainly that it reduces the chances of spinal defects in babies. This includes the risk of spina bifida. Ideally you should start to take this supplement before conceiving, but taking it during the pregnancy has also been shown to be beneficial.

Good sources of folic acid include legumes and beans, citrus, most types of whole grains, leafy vegetables which are dark green such as spinach, poultry, pork, shellfish and liver.
