Perineum exercises to help with birth
There are several things you can do to help your perineum cope with the rigours of birth and reduce the chances of tearing or needing an episiotomy. The Kegels exercises are a vital part of this preparation. In addition you should consider massaging your perineum for the last two months of your pregnancy. Making sure your hands are clean and using a lubricant such as Vaseline or unscented massage oil, use your thumbs to massage the area just inside your vagina, pushing towards the rectum and also outwards. This may feel uncomfortable but should not be painful.
During the labour the perineum can also be assisted by applying warmth between contractions. In addition the squatting position help to open the area up.
