How to test baby hearing at home

What are the signs that my six-month-old baby can hear adequately?

By six months your baby should be responding well to the sounds in her environment. She should turn her head towards the sounds, looking for the source, and respond with body movements. If you hear loud sounds, she should startle, or show other sounds of alarm. In addition, she should respond to the sound of your voice, and other people who are familiar to her. It should not be difficult to tell if she is responsive to sound. If you are in any doubt it is worth asking your doctor to check her hearing or ask for the name of an audiologist in your area as they specialise in this.
