What are Braxton Hicks Contractions?
These sensations, which some women may experience as a
strong pain, were discovered as typical symptoms of pregnancy
by Dr. John Braxton Hicks and thus named after him. By observing
women for many years, he noticed that the uterus muscles
contract during pregnancy. The contractions, which last
30 to 60 seconds, are a normal part of a healthy pregnancy.
Nevertheless not all pregnant women experience Braxton Hicks,
though these start in the beginning of pregnancy. Usually
they are noticed after the 20th week. They may increase
in number and intensity as the pregnancy progresses. Changing
your position or activity can help to relieve the discomfort.
This can also provide an opportunity to practice your breathing
as your due date approaches.
