I can’t believe that at one year old my baby is so firmly
attached to the bottle. Should I be worried?
The bottle is a source of comfort to your baby, just as
a teddy or cuddly toy is. This is not a problem. The problem
is that if you don’t wean your baby now, it will become
harder and harder. As babies turn into toddlers, they tend
to be quite fixed in their habits.
In addition, the way that toddlers drink from the bottle,
taking sips all day long, can lead to tooth decay and other
tooth problems. This is because the juice or milk is coating
the teeth constantly, and this really provides the right
environment for decay. Some babies also get so full up from
all the sipping that it interferes with their eating habits.
They get full without getting adequate nutrition. In addition,
a bottle can cause problems with speech because the baby
has it in the mouth all the time and so does not make enough
sounds. Babies even sometimes play less because holding
the bottle interferes with games and exploring. So you should
consider going through the weaning process as soon as possible.
