Newborn Rashes – Cradle Cap :

I think my baby has cradle cap. The scalp is very red and yellow flakes of skin peel off. My friend’s baby also has it. Is it contagious?

The rash called seborrhoeic dermatitis can occur all over the body, but is extremely common on the scalp. It is NOT contagious, but just extremely common. Ask your chemist for special cradle cap shampoo which may clear it up. Also try to keep the area dry if possible. It is not itchy and does not bother the baby. Be aware that some children take a year or more to get rid of cradle cap, despite the best efforts of their mothers! If the rash extends to the rest of the body, you may wish to visit your doctor who may prescribe cream.
