  Croup – Description :

My friend cancelled her visit because her baby had croup. Can you explain what it is?

Croup is generally caused by a viral infection. It results in a chest condition in which the baby has laboured breathing, and has a cough which sounds just like a dog barking. This infection is extremely common in babies from around 3 months old, but most children have stopped being infected by age 5 years.

However there are other causes for croup, such as allergies and acid reflux. Premature babies tend to be particularly prone. Once a baby has had croup, there is a high likelihood of it reoccurring.
